When it Comes from God

When it Comes from God

Jesus Christ is the Word of God.
Scripture, because He inspired it, is the word of God.
Whatever God communicates to us is the word of God.

Even so, not everything people say God told them is His word, and it can seem daunting to know if our thoughts and desires are from Him or not.

Be discerning. If it’s from Him it will not produce fear, doubt, guilt, or shame. Every good and perfect gift is from Him. (James 1:17) What He says will always be consistent with scripture and it will always be consistent with His character.

God’s character is found in the Lord Jesus Christ. (Hebrews 1:3)

God’s character is seen in scriptures like the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23).
Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

God’s character is found in love. (John 4:8 & 16)
According to 1 Corinthians 13, that means that:
God is patient, kind, not jealous; does not brag, is not arrogant, does not act disgracefully, does not seek His own benefit; is not provoked, does not keep an account of wrongs suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, rejoices with the truth, keeps every confidence, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things, and never fails

God’s character is found in the good and lovely things on which we are urged to think Philippians 4:8.
Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, whatever is excellent, and whatever is worthy of praise—such things are characteristic of Him.

Everything God says will align with these aspects of His character.

What’s more, these describe the character you inherited from your Father when you were born of His Spirit through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. These character traits describe the deepest truth about who you are at the core. Your heart desires and is bent toward these things.

That’s why Jesus said, “…the sheep follow him because they know his voice.” John 10:4b (NASB 2020)

“I am the good shepherd, and I know My own, and My own know Me, just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father.” John 10:14–15 (NASB 2020)
