Righteous Addiction

Righteous Addiction

When you were born of the Spirit, you were made righteous and immersed into Christ. If you weren't righteous, you could not be in Him, and He could not live in you. (Romans 6, Galatians 2:20, 2 Corinthians 5:21, etc.)

It isn't that God sees you as righteous, it's that you actually are righteous. God is not keeping a record of your sins and in fact He has chosen to forget them. They are all forgiven--even the ones you haven't yet committed.

Some have asked whether addiction is sinful. Sure, addiction is sinful. It's bad for you. It hurts and damages you and others. It has consequences here on earth. 1 Corinthians 6:12 Puts it this way, “Everything is permissible for me,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me,” but I will not be mastered by anything.” (CSB)

Jesus wants you to be free from addiction. That's why scripture teaches that you were a slave to sin, but sin is no longer your master. It teaches that you have been freed from the power of sin (the power it had to cause spiritual death) and you are now a slave to righteousness. The Bible could hardly be clearer on this. Romans 6:17–18 says it this way, “But thank God that, although you used to be slaves of sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching to which you were handed over, and having been set free from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness.” (CSB)

That means that your new heart wants to behave in godly ways and does not want to continue in sin.

Trust Father to be working in you and to show you that you are free from sin.

Finally, if your addiction requires medical or psychological help, seek that out. There is nothing wrong or shameful with that.
