You are a Natural Lover

God is love. (1 John 4:16) He created us to be objects of His love (John 3:16) and to have a relationship with Him. (John 17:24)

God did not create us in such a way that we were programmed to love Him. That is not love; it is manipulation and control, and it is inconsistent with who God is.

That’s why passages that say things like “if you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15) are not correctly interpreted as conditions of our acceptance by God.

Instead, these passages are more correctly seen as statements of fact. The moment we believed, He gave us a new heart and put His laws into it. (Hebrews 10:16)

Those laws are “believe” and “love”. (1 John 3:23)

Now, the natural response of our heart is obedience to these laws. (Romans 6:17) We want what He wants. (Philippians 2:13) This is true because the One who is love has poured His love all over our soft new hearts. (Romans 5:5)
