Old You Died With Christ

Old you died with Christ
Part Five of a Series

Romans 6:6-7 (KJV)
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Who, or what, is your old man? No, it is not your Dad. And clearly, it is not your physical body or even your soul, or personality. You have the same body after salvation that you had before, and you have the same personality as well. Your personality is just another way of talking about your soul; your mind, will, and emotions. The Greek word for that is psuche, from which we get our English word psyche—the part of us that is studied in psychology. Our mind, will, and emotions—our soul. So, if it’s not our body and it’s not our soul, there’s only one thing left. I bet you have come to the right conclusion already. It must be our spirit.

That might seem a little scary at first. If we are a spirit, who has a soul and lives in a body, then our spirit is the essence of who we are at the core. If our spirit died, then how can we even exist?

OK, this is where it gets really good!

Look at this passage from Ezekiel 36:26-27 (KJV)
26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

Look what the Lord says here, “a new spirit I will put within you” AND “I will put my Spirit within you”

He says He will “take away the stony heart out of your flesh” and “give you a heart of flesh.”

Second Corinthians 5:17 says it this way, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

This is what it means to be born again. It is a complete change of your ancestry. You were born of water, born of the flesh, born of Adam’s seed. And as we read in John 3:6, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh.

You were born of the flesh, born into Adam, but your “old man” died. God then made you a new creature (a new creation) by putting a new spirit within you. God is a Spirit, and “that which is born of the Spirit is spirit”, according to John 3:6!

You got a completely new ancestry, a new lineage. You come from better stock, immortal stock, righteous holy stock. You were changed, recreated, made new!

Grace and Peace to you.
Larry
